Texas sees too many serious and fatal car accidents

In an effort to improve road safety, the state of Texas keeps records regarding the number of serious and fatal accidents that occur every year. The numbers for 2017 have yet to be released. Here is hoping that 2017 saw fewer car accidents than it did in 2016.

So, how bad was it in 2016? What does the state believe is behind all of these accidents? Can victims of these auto collisions or — in the event of fatality — their surviving family members seek monetary damages for any losses suffered?

It’s all in the numbers

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2016 over 17,000 people suffered serious injuries in what the state labeled as “serious injury” car accidents in Texas, while 3,773 people lost their lives. Every single day, someone died in a motor vehicle accident in Texas. To break things down even further:

  • Every two hours and 20 minutes one person died in a crash
  • Every one minute and 59 seconds one person suffered and injury in a collision
  • Every 57 seconds there was one reportable accident

As you can see, this constitutes a real problem that affects far too many residents and visitors to the state.

What is causing these accidents and where are they happening?

Car accidents happen for a number of reasons. Drunk driving, distracted driving and drivers losing control of their vehicles all contributed to quite a few of the motor vehicle fatalities for 2016. These collisions are happening on interstates, highways, country roads, at intersections, in residential neighborhoods — everywhere.

Seeking Relief

If you are one of the many Texas residents who has suffered injuries or lost a loved one in a car crash, you may be entitled to seek compensation for your losses. It all depends on the details of your case. In order for any sort of legal action to be successful the driver responsible for the collision must have been negligent in some way. Proving negligence can be a challenge sometimes.

Following car accidents, victims or their surviving family members can have their cases reviewed. If legal actions are appropriate, assistance is available in filing and litigating the applicable claims in court or working to settle the matter out of court. Successfully navigated claims may result in a court awarding monetary damages for all legally recoverable losses.
